Meet Aishatu Bubaram, first woman from the North to break the glass ceiling in banking
Aishatu Umar Bubaram, a Princess from Yobe State, is a seasoned banking professional with over 25 years of experience, who has made history as the first female from Northern Nigeria to assume an Executive Management position at First Bank.
Daughter of His Royal Highness, Mai Umar Ibn Wuriwa Bauya Lai-Lai, the current Emir of Pataskum, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Maiduguri (1992-1996), where she graduated with a Second Class Upper distinction and was named the Best Graduating Student in her class.
She furthered her studies at the University of Maiduguri and obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) in 1999-2001.

In 2007-2008, she earned a Master’s degree in International Money, Finance, and Investment from Brunel University in London.
A certified Accountant of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, she is also an Honorary Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

Aishatu has also attended Senior and Advanced Management programs at Lagos Business School and IESE Business School Barcelona, Spain.
In February 2023, she was appointed Group Executive, Commercial Banking North Division, a role that she assumed after holding various senior management positions at First Bank since 2009.
Prior to her current position, she also served as the Group Head, Commercial Banking North and the Zonal Head, Public Sector Group, among others.
Her extensive banking expertise spans operations, strategic business development, asset and portfolio management, risk management, financial advisory, and trade dealings in public sector, retail, and commercial banking.
Under her leadership as Group Head, Commercial Banking North, her team successfully increased business efficiency by creating quality risk assets, reducing non-performing loan portfolios, improving account acquisition, implementing product development, and driving trade transactions that have led to sustained growth, increased profitability, and business stability.
Apart from her successful banking career, Aishatu is the Co-Chairperson and Founder of the Hearty Hands Humanity Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and children through education and healthcare initiatives.
Currently, she serves as the Alternate Global Chair of the First Bank Women Network (FWN) and Alternate Chairman of the First Academy Governing Council at First Bank of Nigeria & Subsidiaries.
Aishatu, with the traditional title of Maira Aisa from the Pataskum Emirate, is happily married with children.
