NDLEA intensifies drug war, seizes convicted baron’s mansion, arrests grandmother

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has seized a luxurious mansion in Lekki, Lagos, belonging to convicted drug baron Nzewi Okenwa.

This was contained in a statement by the Agency’s Director, Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi on Sunday in Abuja.

The property was used to produce methamphetamine and was confiscated following Okenwa’s conviction by a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Okenwa and his associate, Sunny Ukah, were arrested on July 30 and subsequently sentenced to four and three years in prison with options of N4 million and N3 million fine, respectively.

This, he said, was in addition to community service for four and three weeks each, and the the forfeiture of Okenwa’s vehicle marked EKY 496 DJ, to the Federal Government.

“To further deny him of enjoying the proceeds of his criminal activity, the NDLEA filed a civil forfeiture charge against the building used as a clandestine laboratory at the Federal High Court Lagos.

“It initially granted an interim forfeiture order that elapsed on Dec. 6, before the final forfeiture on Dec 7,” he said.

In a separate operation, the NDLEA arrested a 75-year-old grandmother, Sekinat Soremekun, in Lagos for dealing in illicit drugs.

She claimed that her son, Segun, who is now at large, supplied her the drugs that she sold.

The NDLEA has also intensified its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign in schools, markets, worship places, and other public areas across the country.

Lectures against drug abuse were held for students at several schools, including St. Margaret High School in Ilesa, Osun; Federal Government Girls College in Shagamu, Ogun; and Wesley Model Primary and Secondary School in Badagry, Lagos State.

The campaign was also held at Government Junior Secondary School and Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Yaryasa, Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State.
