Protest erupts at National Assembly premises over Kaduna military bombing

Protesters have stormed the National Assembly premises in Abuja on Wednesday to demand justice for over 90 innocent citizens killed during a military operation in Kaduna State.

The demonstrators, who gathered at the entrance gate for over two hours, called for action regarding the tragic incident.

They specifically urged Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, to step up or step down from his role in ensuring the security of the country.

The tragedy occurred in Tudun Biri, Rigasa District of Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where a drone strike during a Maulud celebration resulted in the deaths of over 90 villagers and left more than 60 people injured.

Although the military admitted responsibility for the bombing, the exact circumstances remained undisclosed.

During a press briefing, leaders of the protesters from National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) North West Zone, and Arewa Youth Movement, led by Nasir Ishaku, underscored the urgency of obtaining justice for the victims, especially in the Northern region.

The group called on the National Assembly to investigate the Kaduna killings and take decisive measures to address the deteriorating security situation in the country.

Ishaku passionately emphasised the unacceptable daily loss of innocent lives in Nigeria, particularly in the Northern region, urging the government to prioritise the security and well-being of the people.

He expressed deep concern over the Minister of Defence’s perceived inefficiency, citing the continuous loss of members of the armed forces, the unresolved captivity of university students, and the overall decline in national security as compelling reasons for Badaru to either fulfill his duties or resign from his position.
