Rivers Commissioner resigns as Wike, Fubara power struggle worsens

Professor Zacchaeus Adangor has stepped down from his roles as Rivers state’s attorney general and commissioner of justice, stating personal reasons for his decision.

In his resignation letter to Governor Similanayi Fubara, dated December 14, 2023, Adangor expressed gratitude for the recognition of his qualifications for the position.

His resignation follows the demolition of the State House of Assembly and the presentation of the 2024 budget to a group of lawmakers led by Edison Ehie, who are supportive of Fubara.

Adangor’s letter, addressed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, cited his resignation as a “purely personal decision”.

Adangor had previously served as Rivers AG for eight years under the administration of former governor Nyesom Wike. His resignation takes place amidst the ongoing political crisis in the state, with the state assembly at the center of the conflict.

The rift between Fubara and Wike, who is now serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in the APC government, has contributed to the turmoil in the 32-member Rivers State House of Assembly.

The recent demolition of the Assembly Complex by the governor and the presentation of the budget to a particular group of lawmakers have further intensified the political tensions.

The state government explained that the complex was deemed unfit, and indicated the recognition of Ehie by the court, along with the court’s decision to restrain Martins Amaewhule from using the Assembly complex.

Additionally, Ehie declared vacant the seats of 27 members who defected from the PDP to the APC, marking a significant shift in the political landscape.

This series of events has further escalated the ongoing political turmoil, despite attempts at intervention by President Bola Tinubu and PDP governors. The situation in the oil-rich South-South state remains in a state of upheaval.
