NDLEA reports 2023 activities in Kano, arrest over 1,000 drug dealers, rehabilitate others

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has achieved significant success in its crackdown on drug-related activities in Kano State by arresting 1,016 suspects and seizing nine tons of illicit drugs throughout 2023.

The Commandant of the NDLEA in Kano State, Mr Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, shared these statistics in recent reports.

He said of the apprehended individuals, 40 were females, and 976 were males. The NDLEA achieved noteworthy results in the legal domain, securing 102 convictions and obtaining the forfeiture of five vehicles. Additionally, 104 cases related to drug offenses are still pending in court.

The seized drugs included 6,098kg of Indian hemp, 1,696kg of codeine and tramadol, and 1,335kg of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.

Mr Idris-Ahmad highlighted the agency’s commitment to rehabilitation, noting that 70 clients were successfully rehabilitated.

The NDLEA also delved into visa clearance applications, investigating 598 cases, and conducting 245 substance abuse tests. Six individuals tested positive for different drug abuses during these tests.

The NDLEA, aiming at preventive measures, sensitized 5,000 individuals and engaged drug demand reduction professionals who provided counseling to 1,459 persons. In addition to arrests and legal actions, the agency contributed to community awareness and support for individuals struggling with substance abuse.

Highlighting their commitment to eradicating illegal substances, the NDLEA reported the destruction of more than 15 tons of assorted narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in 2023. The agency’s efforts underscore the significance of addressing the drug menace to ensure public safety and well-being.
