Battling sickle cell encouraged me to initiate a Foundation in Yobe to fight the disease – Aliyu
Story from Kasim Isa Muhammad
Aliyu Muhammad Lawan, also known as Aliyu Bakama, born in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe state, is bravely battling sickle cell disease.
This personal struggle inspired him and his team to establish the A5 Sickle Cell Support Initiative, aiming to encourage Yobe residents to undergo genotype testing before marriage.
In an interview with Neptune Prime reporter Kasim Isa Muhammad, Aliyu shared his journey and the foundation’s mission.
Neptune Prime: Aliyu, what motivated the creation of the A5 Sickle Cell Foundation?
Aliyu: Battling sickle cell myself, I understand the pain it inflicts. In 2016, Musa Malut Adam and I initiated the foundation to assist those with sickle cell disease, raise awareness on its dangers, and promote the importance of genotype testing before marriage. Despite challenges and misconceptions, we’ve achieved significant success in providing understanding about the necessity of genotype testing.
Neptune Prime: Could you shed light on your knowledge of sickle cell disease?
Aliyu: Sickle cell is a severe ailment, as I personally experienced through a recent surgery costing 2.5 million in Kano state hospital. The gravity of the disease emphasizes the need for proactive measures, primarily conducting genotype tests before marriage, to build a society free from sickle cell disease.
Neptune Prime: What specific activities does your initiative undertake?
Aliyu: We provide free genotype tests in Yobe, focusing on Potiskum local government, conduct community services to raise awareness, and offer support to those battling the disease. Our goal is to safeguard future generations by tackling sickle cell comprehensively.
Neptune Prime: Challenges you face?
Aliyu: Some resist genotype testing, viewing it negatively. Funding is a fundamental challenge, despite occasional support from Yobe State Emergency Management Agency. Our aim is to progress toward a sickle cell-free society.
Neptune Prime: What are your next steps?
Aliyu: We aim to lobby the Yobe State House of Assembly to introduce a law mandating genotype testing before marriage statewide. Given the prevalence in the Northeast, including Yobe, relentless efforts are crucial.
Neptune Prime: Does your organisation seek government support?
Aliyu: Desperately in need of funding, we urge public support to conduct our activities effectively.
Neptune Prime: Your message to Yobe’s inhabitants on sickle cell disease?
Aliyu: Take genotype testing seriously. If you’re AS, avoid marrying AS at all costs. Regular genotype testing before serious relationships or marriage is fundamental. The Yobe state government should also support our fight against this serious ailment.
