Conflict looms as historic cattle route in Yobe faces unauthorised destruction

The members of the KACRAN community in Juma’a Village, Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State, are vehemently protesting against the unauthorised destruction of a historic cattle route in the region.

The route, which has been in use for over a century as an international pathway for herders from Cameroon through Nigeria to Niger, is facing permanent obstruction.

Khalil Mohd Bello, the National President of KACRAN, expressed deep concern over the situation, pointing out that the destruction of this vital passage is a direct violation of the executive orders issued by His Excellency,
Governor Mai Mala Buni.

These directives mandated the protection of grazing reserves and cattle routes from encroachment through the establishment of peace committees between farmers and herders.

The alleged involvement of the Village Head of Juma’a, Alh Yusufu Baba, and the Vice Chairman of the Local Government in these actions has fueled further outrage. Despite the admission by the Village Head and subsequent inaction by the Local Government, the destruction and allocation of the cattle route for personal gain have continued unabated.

The consequences of this unauthorised land allocation are far-reaching. Not only does it jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of pastoralists, but it also poses a significant threat to the peace and security of the region.

The impending conflict between farmers and herders, as a result of this disruption, adds urgency to the situation.

In a plea to the Executive Chairman of the Potiskum Local Government Council, the KACRAN community has called for immediate intervention to halt the illegal activities, revoke any illicitly allocated plots, and uphold the directives of His Excellency to safeguard the historic cattle route.

The desperate appeal for swift action underscores the gravity of the situation, with the hope that the government’s commitment to fairness, justice, and the prevention of avoidable conflicts will be upheld.

The growing tension in the region demands immediate attention from the authorities to avert potential unrest and prioritise the preservation of historical heritage and the livelihoods dependent on the cattle route.
