EFCC Chairman exposes religious sect involved in money laundering for terrorists

During a one-day dialogue on “Youth, Religion, and the Fight against Corruption” at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), brought to light startling revelations.

He revealed that the anti-graft agency had uncovered the involvement of a religious sect in Nigeria in laundering money for terrorists.

In addition, he disclosed that another religious body had been shielding a money launderer after suspicious funds were traced to the organisation’s bank account.

Olukoyede emphasised that religious organisations, institutions, sects, and bodies have been found to be complicit in money laundering activities, causing grave concern.

Regarding the disturbing findings, he stated, “A religious sect in this country had been found to be laundering money for terrorists.” He also highlighted a case where the EFCC’s investigation was obstructed by a restraining order obtained by a religious organisation, hindering efforts to recover stolen funds.

Despite the challenges faced, Olukoyede affirmed the EFCC’s commitment to persist in its investigations and legal recourse to combat financial crimes and recover illicit funds.

Notably, since assuming office as Chairman of the EFCC three months ago, the anti-graft commission has secured 747 convictions, with a significant number related to internet-based offenses.

The one-day event also featured the launch of the Interfaith Preaching and Teaching Manual, developed by the Interfaith Anti-Corruption Advisory Committee of the EFCC.

The manual aims to serve as a resource to promote a strong stance against corruption within the adherents of Islam and Christianity.

Additionally, the EFCC’s Fraud Risk Assessment Prevention and Control Project for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies was unveiled during the event, underscoring the agency’s comprehensive approach to combat corruption.
