The Federal Government has taken the decision to suspend the accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.

This move comes after a report highlighted the acquisition of a degree from a university in Benin Republic in under two months, raising concerns about the integrity of the process.

In a statement released by Augustina Obilor-Duru, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, it was stated, “The Federal Ministry of Education vehemently decries such acts and with effect from 2nd January 2024 is suspending evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo Republics pending the outcome of an investigation.”

The Ministry’s efforts are focused on collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, the relevant authorities in Benin and Togo, as well as national security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the issue.

Furthermore, the Ministry is seeking the support of Nigerians in providing information to aid the committee in finding long-term solutions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The decision to suspend the accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates from these countries is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to address the issue of illegal institutions, both domestic and international, that exploit unsuspecting individuals.

The Ministry has issued warnings against engaging with such establishments, and is committed to reviewing its strategies and processes to effectively tackle this challenge.

As the matter unfolds, the Ministry of Education continues to assert its commitment to upholding the integrity of educational qualifications and ensuring the protection of its citizens from fraudulent practices.
