Glo subscribers to face restrictions calling MTN lines – NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved the partial disconnection of Globacom subscribers from calling MTN lines due to an alleged non-settlement of interconnect charges.

This means subscribers of Globacom (Glo) may face restrictions when attempting to call MTN lines in Nigeria.

The NCC, through a public notice signed by Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs Department, revealed that after ten days from the date of the notice, Globacom subscribers will no longer have the ability to make calls to MTN numbers.

However, they will retain the capability to receive calls.

The public notice stated, “The Nigerian Communications Commission hereby notifies the public and subscribers of Globacom Limited (Globacom) that approval has been granted for the partial disconnection of Globacom from MTN Nigeria Communications Plc. due to non-settlement of interconnect charges.”

Globacom was reportedly given an opportunity to comment and present its case after being notified of MTN’s application. Following a thorough examination of the application and the circumstances surrounding the indebtedness, the NCC determined that Globacom lacks sufficient or justifiable reasons for non-payment of the interconnect charges.

The notice further outlined the regulatory basis for the decision, stating, “The Commission has approved the partial disconnection of Globacom to MTN in accordance with Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and Paragraph 9 of the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators, 2012.”

It clarified that during the partial disconnection period, in-bound calls to the Globacom network would still be allowed. The disconnection is set to persist until the NCC determines otherwise.
