Gov. Radda approves Katsina State’s reviewed social protection policy document

Story from Abbas Bamalli

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has given his endorsement to the state’s reviewed Social Protection Policy document, aiming to ensure equitable and sustainable development for the state.

The approved policy mandates the government to establish a comprehensive and all-encompassing social security system that provides coverage to all individuals in need. Furthermore, it guarantees sustainable and fair financing of social protection systems.

Alhaji Mukhtar Usman, Director of Social Protection at the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, confirmed the governor’s approval in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Katsina on Saturday.

The policy is designed to create a more expansive fiscal space for social protection, ensuring it is non-discriminatory, gender-responsive, and takes into consideration the specific needs of individuals with disabilities.

The ministry, with support from UNICEF, organized a stakeholders’ workshop in Jigawa in November 2023 to review and validate the social policy document. The workshop also focused on reviewing the cost implementation plan of the policy, in addition to its monitoring and evaluation.

Raham Farah, Chief of UNICEF Field Office in Kano State, congratulated the Katsina State government on the approval of the policy. He noted that the policy document adhered to the recommendations of the International Labour Organisation’s social protection floors.

This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to delivering a holistic social protection system aimed at reducing poverty and addressing vulnerability in Katsina State.
