Gunmen ambush Nigerian Army brigade, kill lieutenant, 2 others

There has been a devastating attack in the Lake Chad area of Borno State on Saturday, where Boko Haram insurgents ambushed and tragically killed an army lieutenant alongside two vigilante members.

This attack occurred shortly after the military successfully gained control of the Boko Haram enclave in Krenowa, Marte Local Government Area, just five days earlier.

According to sources, the soldiers from the 50 Task Force Brigade were in the midst of heavy bombardment at Krenowa, leading to a difficult withdrawal.

The soldiers had initially made advancements into the Boko Haram enclave as part of their ongoing efforts to intensify the fight against the terrorists.

However, they encountered fierce resistance during the engagement, ultimately resulting in their strategic retreat from Krenowa.

During the withdrawal, they left behind 12 out of the 15 motorbikes deployed for the operation.

Over a hundred soldiers, equipped with multiple gun trucks, regrouped and retreated to Marte town.

Tragically, an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) tank was damaged in the ambush, and the driver sustained a leg injury while managing to escape.

One of the soldiers involved in the operation shared, “We bravely confronted the terrorists at their hideout when unexpectedly, we came under heavy fire, compelling us to retreat. It seemed like they were hiding underground because there was no warning before the ambush. We sought refuge at the headquarters of the 27 Task Force in Marte town.”

The bodies of the slain army lieutenant, a member of the civilian Joint Task Force (JTF), and another vigilante member were unable to be immediately recovered due to the intensity of the insurgents’ firepower.
