Mass Communication student commits suicide over failed relationship with lecturer

A female student in Adamawa State identified as Jemima Shetima Balami has ended her life by consuming a harmful substance believed to be rat poison over an alleged failed relationship with a university lecturer.

Neptune Prime gathered that the 24-year-old lady was a National Diploma II student of the Department of Mass Communication at the Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State.

She was also undergoing her Industrial Training (IT) at the Adamawa Television (ATV), Yola at the time of her death.

Balami, who hailed from Garkida Gombi local government of Adamawa State, died at her residence in Vinikilang, popularly known as Hayin Gada in the Girei local government area of the state.

She was said to be the only daughter of her father.

According to reports, the young lady committed suicide after her boyfriend, a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University (MAU), asked her to end their relationship.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, confirmed the incident to journalists on Monday, stating that the father of the deceased reported the matter to the police.

Nguroje added that the matter was reported to the police in two different versions, but the police promised to unveil the real cause of death.

He said, “The father of Jemima reported that she committed suicide by taking some harmful substances. The other version had it that she visited her boyfriend, a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University (MAU) Yola, and was told to quit the relationship. Angered by the news of exiting her boyfriend, the deceased took poison.”

The PPRO assured that the police would make public the cause of death as the investigation is still ongoing.
