NUC lists 58 illegal universities in Nigeria as FG suspends degree certificates from Uganda, Kenya, Niger Republic
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has discovered over 58 illegal universities operating within Nigeria, emphasising the importance of verifying the recognition of institutions through the commission’s website.
Acting Secretary Chris Maiyaki highlighted the involvement of the Department of State Services in combatting these fraudulent establishments, underscoring the commission’s effort to protect students from falling victim to counterfeit education.
Similarly, the federal government has announced an extension of the suspension of accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates beyond Benin Republic and Togo to encompass Uganda, Kenya, and Niger Republic.
Education Minister Tahir Mamman, speaking on Channels Television, emphasised the severity of the issue, with a promise to widen the suspension to other countries where such unaccredited institutions operate.

This decision comes following an exposé by an undercover journalist exposing the ease of obtaining a degree from a university in Benin Republic and subsequently utilising it to enroll in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The federal government promptly suspended accreditation from the two countries and initiated a probe with an expected report submission within three months, demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding academic integrity and combating illegitimate educational practices.
