Super Eagles gear up for clash with Cameroon in AFCON round of 16

The Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set to take on their long-standing rivals, Cameroon in the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations this Saturday at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.

This venue holds historical significance as it was the same location where the two teams had their first AFCON clash 40 years ago.

Cameroon showcased a remarkable comeback in their last Group C match against The Gambia on Tuesday night. Despite trailing 2-1, they managed to clinch a 3-2 victory, securing their spot in the next round.

This victory placed them on equal points with Guinea, who lost their corresponding match to Senegal.

However, Cameroon secured the edge due to having scored more goals in the group stage.

This upcoming match will mark the eighth encounter between Nigeria and Cameroon in the history of the competition.

Their rivalry dates back to 40 years ago when they first met in the final match. Over the years, they have faced off multiple times, including at the group stage in Maroc ‘88 and in a title fight.

They also crossed paths at Senegal ‘92 and the final match in Lagos 2000.

Additionally, they clashed at the quarter-finals of Tunisia 2004 and most recently at the Round of 16 in Egypt 2019.
