The Whistler condemns unjust detention of Reporter Aniagolu

The Whistler Newspapers express unequivocal condemnation for the unjust arrest, assault, and continued detention of our reporter, Kasarahchi Aniagolu, by officers of the Nigerian Police Force within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Ms. Aniagolu, engaged in her journalistic duties while documenting a raid on Bureau de Change (BDC) operators in Wuse Zone 4 on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, was forcefully apprehended.

Despite clearly identifying herself as a journalist, she faced mistreatment, threats, and had her equipment confiscated.

Presently held at the Anti-Violence Crime Unit (formerly SARS office) in Guzape, her arrest raises serious concerns about press freedom and the violation of fundamental rights.

The blatant disregard for press freedom exhibited by the Nigeria Police Force, coupled with the physical assault and threats to Ms. Aniagolu’s life, is unacceptable and a direct assault on independent journalism.

Conflicting statements from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) headquarters and the FCT Police Command add to the concerns regarding accountability and transparency surrounding the operation.

The Whistler insists on the immediate and unconditional release of Ms. Anaigolu, along with an unreserved apology from the Leadership of The Nigeria Police Force.

“We demand a prompt and transparent investigation into her unlawful arrest, assault, and detention. Those responsible must be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

“We call upon all relevant authorities to uphold the fundamental rights of journalists, ensuring their safety and freedom to report without fear or intimidation.”
