Tragedy as 3 Kwara children suffocate to death after locking selves inside car

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim ABAGA

Three siblings have tragically died inside a car parked on Boluke Line, Zango-Kulende quarters in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The children were said to have succumbed to suffocation after they locked themselves inside the vehicle while it was parked within their compound.

The distressing incident occurred around 2:00 pm on Sunday, leaving the entire community in shock.

The trio, comprising a boy and two girls, met their untimely fate as their mother, Shade Silifat, had left to purchase noodles for their school meals. Upon her return, she found their footwears abandoned outside the car, prompting her to call out for them to no avail.

Alarmed by the eerie silence, she raised the alarm, prompting concerned neighbours to force the car door open. The sight that greeted them was heartbreaking, leading to the mother’s collapse before she was revived.

The children were rushed to Olutayo clinic, a nearby private medical facility, for urgent medical attention. However, the gravity of the situation necessitated their transfer to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where their unfortunate demise was confirmed.

DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, confirmed the grim incident during a telephone conversation on Monday. While the family had laid the children to rest at the Muslim cemetery, Osere, the police emphasized that no official report had been filed, describing the entire ordeal as “very unfortunate.”
