Anambra woman, teenage daughter face imprisonment for attempting to sell 2 sons for N1.8 million
The Ministry of Women and Social Welfare in Anambra State has proceeded to take appropriate legal actions in the case of a 38-year-old woman, Chinyere Chukwu, who attempted to sell her two sons for N1.8 million.
The shocking incident occurred in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
Chukwu, in a desperate response to economic hardship, colluded with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy, in an attempt to sell her sons.
Commissioner Ify Obinabo, leading a team of security operatives, swiftly apprehended Chukwu and her daughter after receiving information about the transaction.
The ministry, posing as potential buyers, intervened and prevented the exchange from taking place.
She said, “I have eleven kids and when I could not cater to them, I decided to sell two of them. Since they are boys, the prices were kept at N1 million each but after serious bargaining by the commissioner, who posed as the buyer, we decided to sell them at N1.8 million, instead of initial N2 million.

“I developed an interest in the business and decided to embark on such adventure after my neighbour successfully sold one of her kids. This was my first attempt at the business.
“I had only two kids for my husband and got the remaining nine children after my husband’s demise and ever since then, I have not been able to give them adequate care and support,” the woman said.
Chukwu explained that her decision was driven by her inability to provide for her eleven children.
Notably, she mentioned that after her husband’s passing, she struggled to care for the additional nine children she had.
In a concerning revelation, she cited a neighbour’s success in selling a child as her inspiration for this distressing scheme.
The 17-year-old daughter, the eldest among the children, expressed her desire to utilise the proceeds from the sales to further her education.
In response to this distressing situation, Commissioner Obinabo ordered the immediate custody of the remaining children for their wellbeing. Additionally, she expressed the government’s commitment to pursuing the apprehension of the neighbour who had previously sold off a child, emphasising that the retrieved child would undergo contact tracing.
Commissioner Obinabo also affirmed the government’s determination to tackle such crimes, warning that perpetrators will face the appropriate legal consequences.
