NDLEA arrest female lawyer, boyfriend, mother, herbalist in illicit drug raid

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a female lawyer, her boyfriend, mother, and a herbalist for their alleged involvement in illicit drug dealings.

The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, disclosed that a substantial quantity of various illicit drugs was seized during a raid on their premises.

The operation, conducted by the NDLEA and Abia Homeland Security, took place at 23 Arochukwu Street, Umuahia, on Feb. 14, around 11:00 p.m.

The arrested individuals include the female lawyer, Adaobi Nweke (36), her boyfriend, Emeka Nkemefola (36), and her mother, Ngozi Nweke (65). Additionally, Dike Okpara (43), an herbalist to the family, Chukwudi Abel (33), Amarachi Paul (18), and their 22-year-old salesgirl, Blessing Jonathan, were also taken into custody.

Investigations revealed the family’s longstanding involvement in the illicit drug trade, inherited from their late father, Jonathan Nweke.

The seized items include varying quantities of Cocaine, Heroin, Methamphetamine, Loud, Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp), and precursor chemicals, with a total weight of 1.670kg. The authorities also confiscated N578,400 as a monetary exhibit.

In a related incident, NDLEA operatives intercepted a 25-year-old Uber driver, Joshua Henry, attempting to deliver 26.2 grams of Loud, an illicit substance. The suspect picked up the drugs in Abuja for delivery to a customer in Keffi, Nasarawa State, on Feb. 12.

Furthermore, the agency reported the arrest of 54-year-old Dada Adedara in Dan Bare Area, Kano State, on Feb. 14, with 468 blocks of marijuana weighing 246.4kg. On the same day, operatives in Ogun state detained Kafayat Junaid and Sakirat Osoanu with 13kg of Indian hemp.

In Kogi, Charles Chike (45) was apprehended in a Lokoja hotel on Feb. 16 with 290 blocks of compressed cannabis weighing 116kg, concealed in the boot of a blue Honda Accord car marked Abuja ABC 853 SL, originating from Ekiti state en route to Abuja.
