Rivers police command denies releasing officers accused of kidnapping, extortion
The Police Command in Rivers State has refuted claims of releasing three officers accused of kidnapping and extorting $3,000 from two victims in the region.
SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the command, released a statement over the weekend in Port Harcourt to rectify the misunderstanding.
She clarified, “The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a viral publication circulating on social media and online platforms regarding the alleged release of the three officers.”
The officers in question, namely ASP Doubara Edonyabo, ASP Talent Mungo, and Insp. Odey Michael, remain in custody at the Rivers State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and are cooperating with the authorities during the standard disciplinary process.

Additionally, SP Grace Iringe-Koko emphasized that the officers had taken part in an identification parade on Feb. 2, addressing a fresh complaint filed against them.
The statement quoted the state’s Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, condemning fake news and requesting responsible journalism. It also stressed the importance of media organisations upholding professionalism by delivering accurate information and seeking police reactions before publishing reports.
The command’s spokesperson reassured residents of timely updates on the outcome of the disciplinary committee instituted to investigate the matter and urged them to disregard the misinformation.
