Smugglers convicted, sentenced to 2 years with hard labour for assaulting Customs officers
In a recent court ruling in Abeokuta, Ogun State, two smugglers, Felarun Oluwasegun, and Fakorede Jelili, faced justice with a 2-year imprisonment sentence and hard labor for contravening customs laws, possessing smuggled goods, and assaulting Customs Officers.
The Nigeria Customs Service, led by the Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, successfully secured these convictions following an incident at Owoyele-Igbogila, Yewa-North Local Government, Ogun State in 2023.
The CG asserted that 11 suspects were convicted for committing offences of improper importation, assault of Customs officers, possession of Pangolin scales meant for export, among other illicit items, while some other smuggling and related cases instituted in the courts are at various stages of prosecution and would be followed up diligently.
The verdict was delivered by Honourable Justice Demi-Ajayi of the Federal High Court, Abeokuta.

Abdullahi Maiwada, Chief Superintendent of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, in the statement expressed satisfaction with the convictions, emphasizing the Customs Service’s commitment to holding offenders accountable.
The smugglers, Felarun Oluwasegun and Fakorede Jelili, had been in remand at the correctional center in Abeokuta since their arraignment in May 2023 until their recent conviction.
