S’West states plan joint security patrols, more arms
Efforts are underway by the governors in the South-West region to establish joint patrols involving security agencies in order to eliminate the presence of kidnappers, which has created unbearable living conditions for the residents.
The state governors are also strategising to provide more logistical support to security agents, including the military, police, Amotekun, vigilantes, and local hunters, among others, to address the resurgence of kidnapping and killings in the area.
The region, once known for its peace, has now become a hotspot for kidnappers and other criminals. In recent incidents, two Ekiti monarchs were killed, and individuals, including school children, have been kidnapped. These occurrences highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures.

Addressing the situation, the Chief Press Secretary to the Oyo State Governor, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, emphasized the state government’s commitment to strengthening security across all areas. Notably, the government has provided vehicles and communication gadgets to security agencies, with a focus on enabling them to effectively cover all parts of the state.
Additionally, the governor’s security advisor and team maintain regular communication with their Ogun State counterparts to develop strategies for preempting security threats.
Taking measures in Ogun
The Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Ogun State Governor, Kayode Akinmade, expressed deep concern over the increasing criminal activities, particularly kidnapping, in the state. He highlighted the deployment of drones and specialized equipment for monitoring and intelligence gathering, along with collaborative efforts for region-wide patrols with other states.
Empowering Amotekun in Ekiti
The Special Adviser on Media to Ekiti State Governor, Olayinka Oyebode, revealed the governor’s intention to lobby the Federal Government for permission to arm Amotekun, the regional security outfit. This move is aimed at enhancing their operational capabilities and effectiveness in securing the region’s bushes and forests.
Tactical measures
Speaking on behalf of the Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 11, covering Oyo and Osun states, Benjamin Ayeni highlighted the creation of a tactical team to counter the escalating criminal activities in the region. Both states have strategized measures such as anti-kidnapping teams, technical intelligent response units, and joint task forces involving civilians, Amotekun personnel, vigilantes, and local hunters.
These efforts aim to address local crime and prevent it from spreading to neighboring states.
