Fake investigator sentenced to 7 years in jail for defrauding ex-Governor’s wife

Mohammed Momoh, posing as a fake investigator, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by Justice Peter Kekemeke of an FCT High Court for defrauding Mrs. Mario Al-Makura, the wife of a former governor of Nasarawa state.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had brought charges against Momoh for false pretenses, leading to his sentencing by Justice Kekemeke after considering a plea for leniency from his counsel, Godwin Omagbogu.

Omagbogu highlighted that Momoh was a first-time offender and a father to three young children and a wife.

Although the prosecution counsel, Diana Nkwap, pushed for the court to exercise discretion in the sentencing, Justice Kekemeke noted that the sentence for the defendant’s offense ranges from seven to twenty years.

Ultimately, Momoh was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in accordance with the law.

Following Momoh’s conviction on February 27, based on evidence provided by three witnesses, it was revealed that he attempted to defraud Mrs. Al-Makura by falsely claiming to be a private investigator who could help halt an investigation into accounts belonging to the governor.

The defendant was arrested by the EFCC in December 2017 after collecting a marked N2 million from Mrs. Al-Makura during a sting operation.

Momoh’s actions were found to be in violation of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, as he deceived Mrs. Al-Makura with false promises.

Despite pleading not guilty to the charge, he has now been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for his crimes.
