Reps calls for investigation into military personnel deaths in Delta

In a solemn session on Tuesday, the House of Representatives ordered an investigation into the tragic killing of 16 military personnel in the Okuama community of Delta state.

The soldiers, serving at the 181 Amphibious Battalion, were on a mission of peace when they were ambushed and brutally murdered last Thursday in a conflict-ridden area between Okuama and its neighbor, Okoloba.

The decision to launch the probe was made following an urgent motion brought by Rep. Babajimi Benson (APC-Lagos) during plenary in Abuja.

Benson expressed concerns that such senseless killings could deeply impact the morale of the military and hinder the progress being made in the fight against insecurity.

During the session, a moment of silence was observed to honor the fallen soldiers, whose lives were tragically cut short in the line of duty.

The House called on the Armed Forces of Nigeria to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings, condemning the acts as heartless, gruesome, and despicable.

Additionally, the House urged the army to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure that all individuals responsible for the heinous crime are brought to justice.

Committees on defense were mandated to work closely with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, ensuring diligent follow-up and reporting back to the House within four weeks.
