23 soldiers slain in terrorist ambush

The Ministry of Defence disclosed a devastating loss of twenty-three soldiers in a “terrorist” ambush occurring in western Niger during a security operation near the borders with Burkina Faso and Mali.

The tragic incident unfolded during a security sweep in Tillaberi, located in the volatile three borders area, over Tuesday and Wednesday. The ministry reported that the soldiers fell victim to a “complex ambush” orchestrated by the terrorists. In response, approximately “30 terrorists had been neutralised.”

The military operations aimed to provide reassurance to local communities facing threats from armed groups involved in activities such as “murders, extortion, and cattle rustling,” as outlined by the ministry.
