Nigeria’s Nnamdi secures historic men’s Javelin Gold at 13th African Games

Nigeria’s Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi made history at the 13th African Games in Ghana by clinching the gold medal in the men’s Javelin event.

Following in the footsteps of Anthony Oyakhire (1965), Christian Okemefula (1991), and Pius Bazighe (1995), Nnamdi becomes the fourth Nigerian athlete to achieve this prestigious feat.

Nnamdi’s victory was nothing short of spectacular as he not only outperformed the defending champion and Games record-holder, Julius Yego, but also surpassed his own National Record (NR) set two years prior, reaching an impressive distance of 82.80m, marking a new Personal Best (PB) for him.

This remarkable achievement also marks Nnamdi as the first Nigerian man to surpass the 82m mark in javelin throwing, adding to his list of accolades.

Notably, Nnamdi’s winning throw, achieved during his first attempt, highlights his exceptional talent and readiness for competition, especially considering that the African Games served as his inaugural event for the year 2024.

Julius Yego’s commendable performance earned him the Silver medal with a distance of 81.74m, while Abdel Khaliq Mostafa of Egypt secured the Bronze medal with a throw of 78.10m.

Additionally, Team Nigeria’s Samuel Kure showcased his skills, finishing in 5th place with a distance of 76.28m, thanks to his last attempt.
