FG begins renovation of Dodan Barracks

The Federal Government has commenced the renovation of the former seat of power, Dodan Barracks, with plans to finish the works by May 29, 2024, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Senior government officials revealed that the renovation became imperative due to the threat posed by recurrent floods and the rapid deterioration of critical components of the structure.

This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s proposal to allocate N4 billion for the renovation of the official residence in Lagos and an additional N3 billion to refurbish the Vice President’s official quarters in the state. The Federal Executive Council approved this allocation on October 30, 2023, as part of a N2.18 trillion supplementary budget for the fiscal year.

A senior government official, who preferred anonymity, confirmed that the renovation works have commenced in line with the approved budget. They emphasized the urgency of the rehabilitation due to the structural vulnerabilities exposed during the last rainy season.

Dodan Barracks, situated in Ikoyi, Lagos, served as Nigeria’s former military headquarters and seat of power from 1966 until 1991. Notably, it housed the office and residence of several military heads of state, including Yakubu Gowon, Murtala Muhammed, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Muhammadu Buhari.

“Despite its historical significance, Dodan Barracks faced neglect after the relocation of the seat of government to Abuja in 1991”. However, recent efforts aim to revitalise the site, including plans to upgrade its facilities and preserve historical artifacts.

“The renovation project is expected to be completed by May 29, 2024, and may serve as an official venue subsequently, possibly for President Bola Tinubu”.
