Army confirms tragic loss of soldier, farmers in Benue communities

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the tragic loss of one soldier and the injury of another at a village in the Apa Local Government Area of Benue state where troops were stationed in the area to address the recurrent assaults by suspected bandits following ongoing attacks.

The Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), Major General Sunday Iserihen Igbinomwanhia,disclosed this information to the press on Monday.

He stated that one soldier was killed, and another was wounded during the incident.

In retaliation, the troops were able to eliminate three assailants and wound several others.

Additionally, they recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from the bandits.

Major General Sunday revealed that OPWS is currently engaged in a clearance operation to drive out suspected bandits who have infiltrated the Kwande Local Government Area.

There has been a surge in violence resulting in numerous deaths among villagers in the region over the weekend.

It is noteworthy that last month, another soldier lost his life, and two were injured in the Agatu Local Government Area due to an ambush by bandits.

The attacks, characterised by guerrilla tactics, have targeted both farming communities and peacekeeping troops deployed in the area.
