Delta Assembly condole with Nigerian Army following tragic loss of 16 soldiers

In a solemn gesture of empathy, the Delta House of Assembly has extended heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Army in the wake of the tragic killing of 16 soldiers in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area (LGA) in Delta State.

The assembly’s show of solidarity came after a motion put forward by Mr. Festus Utuama (PDP-Ughelli South) during the plenary session in Asaba on Tuesday.

Utuama, with a heavy heart, conveyed profound sorrow over the loss of lives and conveyed sympathies to the families of the fallen soldiers and the entire Nigerian Army.

Advocating for justice, Utuama urged for a thorough investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of those responsible for the heinous act.

Additionally, he called for the establishment of a commission of enquiry by the governor to delve into the underlying causes of the clashes between the Okuama and Ukoloba communities.

The sentiment was echoed by other members of the assembly, including the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Arthur Akpowowo (PDP-Ethiope East), Majority Leader, Mr. Emeka Nwaobi (PDP-Aniocha North), and Deputy Majority Leader, Mr. Festus Okoh (PDP-Ika South).

They appealed to the Nigerian Military to exercise restraint in seeking justice and implored against retaliatory actions towards the community.

The soldiers met their unfortunate fate during a peacekeeping mission amidst a communal clash between Okuama and Ukoloba in Bomadi LGA, emphasising the pressing need for resolutions and peace-building efforts in the region.
