FG vows action against contractors of N5bn BUK failed solar project
The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, asserted on Friday that the Federal Government is determined to pursue contractors responsible for the unsuccessful 7.1 megawatts solar hybrid power plant at Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
While inspecting the solar plant site after commissioning various structures at the university, Mamman emphasized the government’s commitment to holding the contractors accountable for the project’s shortcomings.
The solar project, commissioned in 2019, was intended to provide relief to the community by enhancing research and studies but failed to meet expectations despite an expenditure of almost N5 billion in taxpayers’ funds.
“Somebody can’t just come here and put so much money, and there is no result or outcome from it. We are going to chase up those who handle this project to ensure we get value for our money,” Mamman stated.
Expressing concern over the misuse of taxpayers’ money, Mamman highlighted the importance of accountability, stating that the government would leverage its authority to hold individuals accountable for the project’s failure.

The Minister commended the diligence and prudence of Bayero University’s management in handling its funds, especially in executing projects aimed at advancing research and innovation.
He acknowledged the university’s role in contributing to Nigeria’s development through the generation of new ideas.
The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Proffessor Sagir Adamu Abbas, expressed gratitude for the Minister’s support and outlined the university’s commitment to executing projects that enhance the learning environment.
Professor Abbas noted the university’s high ranking and its dedication to providing valuable research and innovation for national development.
As the Federal Government vows to address the issues surrounding the failed solar project, the focus remains on accountability, transparency, and the efficient use of public funds in advancing educational infrastructure.
