Yobe varsity collaborates with Google, provides training on AI for 110 students
Yobe State University, in collaboration with Google Search, is currently hosting a five-day workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) research for more than 110 students from the Northeast region.
Dr. Bashir Maina, a faculty member of the Computer Science Department at the University, explained that the workshop aims to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become AI innovators and contribute towards solving local and global challenges.
As the Lead Investigator of the program, Dr. Maina highlighted Google’s recognition of the underrepresentation of Africans in the computing research field, leading to the proposal for this initiative to engage students in hands-on training in AI research, specifically focusing on machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP).

The workshop will feature facilitators from 11 different countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa, who will share their expertise to provide a comprehensive learning experience for the students.
Dr. Maina emphasised the importance of empowering students to become innovators rather than just consumers of AI-based solutions, with the goal of enabling them to propose solutions and make significant contributions to the field.
Prof. Muhammad Daura, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, commended Dr. Maina and his team for their efforts in developing the research program, as well as for securing funding from Google.
He expressed his support for the initiative, which aims to inspire and empower students to excel in the field of AI research.
