Why Borno is yet to celebrate rescue of 187 Chibok schoolgirls – Governor Zulum

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State explained that the state government has refrained from celebrating the return or rescue of 187 out of the total 276 abducted Chibok schoolgirls because approximately 89 of them are still in captivity.

During a joint press briefing at the NUJ Centre in Maiduguri, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, and Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, represented Governor Zulum, marking the 10-year anniversary since the abduction saga.

Governor Zulum solicited prayers from all to ensure the remaining Chibok girls and others in captivity are rescued.

He commended the sustained and collective efforts of the government, security agencies, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and other stakeholders for rescuing many Chibok girls and restoring relative peace in the state.

“It is now 10 years ago when Boko Haram armed terrorists invaded Government Girls Secondary School Chibok, precisely on 14th April, 2014,” said Governor Zulum’s representative.

The Borno State Government remains committed to rescuing and reuniting the remaining Chibok girls with their families, acknowledging the pain and anguish experienced by the families of those still in captivity.

Out of the 276 abducted Chibok Girls, 187 have been rescued and reunited with their families. Most of the rescued girls have been enrolled in different schools or graduated under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.

Some have been enrolled in local and foreign scholarships or empowerment programs, while many have been reunited with their immediate families and are receiving psychosocial support to reconcile them with normal life.
