Clash between soldiers, tricyclists in Yobe leave 3 dead, several injured

Three individuals were tragically killed while several others sustained injuries following a clash between a Nigerian Army patrol vehicle and a Keke Napep rider in Gashua, located 187 kilometers from the state capital, Damaturu.

An eyewitness, Adamu Hassan, recounted that the incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon at the Garin Alkali market in Gashua. The Keke Napep riders’ association organised protests after the incident, leading to road blockages in the area.

In response, irate Army personnel began shooting, resulting in injuries to some protesters who were later taken to the Specialist Hospital, Gashua, for medical care.

According to sources from the hospital, numerous casualties, including fatalities, were brought in for treatment, though the exact count remains unknown at this time.

Chairman of the Bade Local Government Area, Ibrahim Babagana, confirmed that three individuals lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries in the clash. Efforts are being made by local authorities, including himself and the emir of Bade, to de-escalate the situation.

At present, the Commander of Sector 2, Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai, has not issued a statement regarding the incident.

Gashua remains on edge following this unfortunate turn of events as tensions persist between the Keke Napep riders and the Army in the region.
