Alhaji Mai Aliyu Muhammad Biriri, first Emir of Damaturu, passes away at 82

Alhaji Mai Aliyu Muhammad Biriri, the inaugural Emir of Damaturu, has passed away at the age of 82. He succumbed to a prolonged illness in Saudi Arabia, leaving behind children and his wife.

Alhaji Biriri’s death marks the end of an era for the historic city of Damaturu, leaving behind a rich legacy and fond memories among his people.

Alhaji Mai Aliyu Muhammad Biriri was appointed as the inaugural Emir of Damaturu in August 1993, serving as a prominent figure in the region. “However, his tenure was cut short when he was removed from office by the military regime in January 1995”.

“Despite the challenges he faced, Alhaji Biriri remained dedicated to serving his community and contributing to the development of the region”.

Prior to his role as Emir, Alhaji Biriri held several esteemed positions, including Commissioner of Finance in 1984 in old Borno State. He was also instrumental in leading the currency swap under the military government of President Muhammadu Buhari in 1984 in Western Borno, which is the present-day Yobe state.

Additionally, Alhaji Biriri served as the Managing Director of the Nigeria Security, Printing, and Minting Company, as well as the Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission in Yobe.

“Upon receiving news of his passing, family members confirmed that Alhaji Biriri passed away in a Saudi Arabian hospital”.

His burial is scheduled to take place at Masjidul Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, with arrangements to be announced later. The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Pilgrims Commission, Alhaji Usman Mai Aliyu Biriri, confirmed the sad news, expressing condolences on behalf of the family.

Alhaji Mai Aliyu Muhammad Biriri’s death marks the end of a chapter in the history of Damaturu, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to his people.

As the community mourns his loss, they fondly remember his contributions and the impact he made during his lifetime.
