A tribute to Hajiya Iya Gana Muktar, by Abubakar Kado

In loving memory of Hajiya Iya Gana Muktar, born in September 1948 in Gashua, Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State. She was a beacon of strength, grace, and wisdom, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.

Her journey began at Central Primary School, Gashua, where she laid the foundation of her education from 1953 to 1956. She continued her academic pursuit at Provincial Girls School, Maiduguri, from 1956 to 1961. Her thirst for knowledge led her to Government Girls College Dala and Pivotal Teachers College Kano, where she honed her skills from 1962 to 1968. She furthered her education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics Education in 1977.

Her dedication to the field of education was evident as she served as a classroom teacher, Vice Principal, and Principal in several secondary schools across old Kano State. With the birth of Yobe State in 1991, she assumed the role of Director of Science and Technology in the Yobe State Ministry of Education, followed by her tenure as Director General of the Commission for Women from 1992 to 1993.

Hajiya Iya’s commitment to uplifting women’s rights was unwavering. She served as Chairperson of the Bade Local Government Management Committee from 1994 to 1995, Secretary of the Yobe State Hospital Management Board from 1996 to 1999, and Commissioner of the Yobe State Ministry of Women Affairs from 1999 to 2001.

Her exemplary leadership continued as Permanent Secretary of Establishment from 2001 to 2003 and as a Member of the Yobe State House of Assembly Service Commission in 2004.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Hajiya Iya was a trailblazer in various organizations, serving as a member of the Yobe State Advisory Committee, Secretary of the National Mathematical Association of Nigeria, and President of the Yobe State Women Society.

Her legacy as a veteran educator, astute administrator, and champion of women’s rights will forever be cherished.

On April 21, 2024, Hajiya Iya Gana Muktar peacefully bid farewell after a valiant battle with illness, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memories continue to inspire us all.

Survived by her beloved children:

– Alhaji Kabir Ibrahim Mukhtar, NNPC, Lagos.
– Hajia Hauwa Ibrahim Mukhtar, NNDC, Kaduna.
– Alhaji Nasiru Ibrahim Mukhtar, YSU, Damaturu.
– Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim Mukhtar, NNPC, Abuja.

And cherished by her 10 grandchildren.
