Liverpool’s championship hopes hang, after West Ham draw

Liverpool’s hopes for a quadruple of trophies are fading as Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield is losing steam. The disappointing result came in a draw against West Ham at the London Stadium, where Liverpool urgently needed a victory to stay in contention alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.

Despite goals from Andy Robertson and an own goal from West Ham’s Alphonse Areola, Liverpool could only manage a 2-2 draw as Michail Antonio scored for David Moyes’s side, levelling the match.

With this single point, Liverpool now sits third in the Premier League table with 75 points, trailing defending champions Manchester City by one point, who still have two games in hand.

Arsenal leads the pack with a two-point advantage over Liverpool and a game in hand.

Klopp, disappointed with the draw, deflected questions about the title race in the aftermath of the match. “I’m not in the mood to talk about that to be honest or look at that at all,” he expressed to TNT Sports. He acknowledged the missed opportunities that have hindered his team in recent games, stating, “That has been the story of the last four weeks.”

Liverpool had a strong start at the London Stadium, with energy fading as the match progressed. West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta escaped punishment for a reckless tackle early on, while Liverpool’s Luis Diaz hit the post and Allison Becker made a vital save from Jarrod Bowen’s shot.

Despite attempts to regain control and taking the lead through Robertson and Cody Gakpo, Liverpool was unable to secure a win as Antonio equalized for West Ham with a header. Klopp made tactical substitutions to find a late winner, but ultimately Harvey Elliott’s shot off the crossbar was Liverpool’s last clear chance.

Facing a battle to secure European football next season, West Ham remains in eighth place on the Premier League table, with uncertainty surrounding Moyes’s future despite his recent success with the club.
