Tragically, Fatima’s life took a dramatic turn on March 26, 2007, when she was involved in an accident that left her with a spinal cord injury and paraplegia. She underwent multiple surgeries, including two major operations in 2008 and later in India, to stabilize her spine. Despite these efforts, Fatima faced numerous complications, including spontaneous extrusion of the urethral catheter and leakage, which led to further surgeries, including an ilial conduit urinary diversion in 2021 and a catheterizable continent reservoir using caecum and terminal ilium in October 2023.

Throughout her journey, Fatima adapted and thrived, earning her degree in adult education from the University of Maiduguri through online classes, with the support of her siblings who accompanied her to exams. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to build a successful amall and medium business, encompassing kitchen utensils, poultry, baking, and more.

Fatima’s remarkable life embodied the phrase “finding ability through disability.” Her unwavering optimism, generosity, and kindness inspired countless individuals, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

We celebrate Fatima’s life, her unrelenting spirit, and the indelible mark she left on the lives of those who knew her. May she rest in peace, and may her memory continue to be a blessing to us all.
