ABU VC commends IAR’s introduction of over 10 crop varieties to Nigerian farmers

In a significant development, the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) has introduced over 10 crop varieties to Nigerian farmers, earning commendation from the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Professor Kabiru Bala.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Professor Bala emphasized the university’s commitment to using these technologies to combat hunger and ensure food security, particularly in the face of Nigeria’s insecurity challenges. He praised IAR for its pivotal role in generating and disseminating agricultural technology among farming communities.
Representing the ABU Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Sani Shehu, the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, reiterated the university’s dedication to promoting food availability for academic and social well-being. He underscored the importance of ABU’s Agricultural Veterinary complex research efforts in achieving this goal.
Addressing the pressing issue of climate change, Professor Ado Yusuf, the Executive Director of IAR, highlighted the institute’s efforts in developing climate-resilient crop varieties. He emphasized the use of cutting-edge biotechnology to create climate-smart crop varieties, resistant to droughts, floods, pests, and diseases.

Echoing the sentiments of appreciation, Professor Garba Hamidu Sharubutu, the Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria, praised IAR’s contributions to shaping Nigeria’s agricultural landscape. He commended the institute for its dedication, innovation, and impactful interventions, which are driving sustainable economic development across the nation.
