The recent meeting between the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi, and the Director General of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Hafsat Bakari, underscores a crucial partnership aimed at bolstering border security in Nigeria.

Held on Tuesday, 16 April 2024, at the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Abuja, the meeting focused on strengthening collaboration to combat smuggling, money laundering, and terrorism financing activities.

CGC Adeniyi welcomed DG Bakari and her delegation, commending her dedication to advancing Nigeria’s interests and her collaborative approach to governance. He emphasized the importance of mutual support between the two agencies in addressing pressing issues related to border security.

“We need to form an internal team that will be drawn up from our side to review those outstanding issues so that we begin to see, in a determined effort, what we can do,” CGC Adeniyi stated, highlighting the need for coordinated action.

In response, DG Bakari lauded the Nigeria Customs Service for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country’s borders and combating smuggling activities. She stressed the significance of information sharing and intelligence cooperation in achieving common goals.

“We recognise the vital role of the NCS in protecting Nigeria’s borders, preventing the smuggling of illicit goods, but also in ensuring that those who import goods into our country pay the appropriate fees and levies that are due to the federal government,” DG Bakari affirmed.

The NFIU’s ultimate objective, according to DG Bakari, is to enhance Nigeria’s safety and prosperity by implementing efficient systems, processes, and technologies to identify and prevent the smuggling of currency and other high-value items.

The meeting between CGC Adeniyi and DG Bakari signals a collaborative effort to strengthen border security measures and combat illicit activities that threaten Nigeria’s economic stability and national security. By pooling their resources and expertise, the Nigeria Customs Service and the NFIU aim to create a more secure and prosperous environment for the nation and its citizens.
