Father, son, neighbour die while retrieving phone from pit toilet

A 60-year-old man identified as Malam Danjuma, popularly known as “Black” with his son, Ibrahim, 35, and one Aminu Gaye, also 35, have died while trying to recover a cellphone from a pit toilet at Yar’Gwanda Village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the spokesperson for Kano Fire Service, revealed that the incident happened on Sunday morning.

However, one Abba Alasan, 28, was rescued alive from the facility.

According to him, “We received an emergency call from Tsanyawa Fire Station at about 11:00 a.m. from one Aminu Yar’gwanda, that four men had been trapped inside a pit toilet.

“We immediately sent our rescue team to the scene at about 11:15 a.m.

“Danjuma was trying to retrieve a cell phone that fell into the pit toilet when he got trapped. Thereafter, his son entered the pit toilet to save his father and also got trapped.

“Gaye and Alasan also entered to rescue both men and they also got trapped,” he said.

Abdullahi said the first three victims were rescued unconscious while the fourth victim was rescued alive.

He said all the victims were handed over to Superintendent of Police, Iro Lado, at Tsanyawa police division.

The Public Relations Officer said the police conveyed the victims to Bichi Special Hospital for medical attention where doctors on duty confirmed the three dead and one still alive.
