US considers over $1 billion arms deal for Israel amid middle east tensions

The United States is reportedly contemplating a substantial arms deal worth over $1 billion for Israel, encompassing tank ammunition, military vehicles, and mortar rounds, amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to sources cited in a recent report.

The proposed package by the Biden administration includes transfers of $700 million in 120 mm tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles, and less than $100 million in 120 mm mortar rounds, as revealed by officials familiar with the matter.

This potential deal, which is among the largest to Israel since Hamas’ October 7 attack resulting in 1,200 casualties, would supplement the ongoing military aid package currently under consideration by Congress.

The sale necessitates approval from the US Congress and may take several months or even years to be executed, as stated in the report.

The State Department has not yet responded to requests for comment on this matter.

This development comes amidst mounting criticism directed at the US for its military assistance to Israel, particularly in light of reports of civilian casualties in Gaza. Additionally, tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated following Tehran’s retaliatory drone and missile strike in response to the April 1 attack on its consulate in Syria.

Last month, several Democratic senators urged President Joe Biden to suspend arms sales to Israel due to allegations that it is in violation of a 1961 law prohibiting arms sales to nations impeding the delivery of American aid.
