Xavi commits to stay as Barcelona Coach

Barcelona has confirmed that Xavi will continue as the coach of the club, despite his earlier announcement in January about intending to step down at the end of the season due to the challenges of the role.

The decision for Xavi’s continuity follows a series of discussions with club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco, where the 44-year-old had a change of heart after initial plans to leave.

This confirmation comes shortly after Barcelona’s elimination from the Champions League quarter-finals by Paris Saint-Germain and a significant setback in La Liga, falling behind Real Madrid by 11 points after a Clasico defeat.

Xavi, a former Barcelona midfielder, expressed feeling “liberated” by his decision to initially step down, citing the immense pressure and lack of appreciation for the role. Despite the challenges, he has now opted to continue leading the team.

Since his appointment in November 2021, Xavi has made significant contributions, including winning the league title last season. However, Barcelona faced setbacks this season, including defeats in the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey.

Following Xavi’s initial announcement to leave, the club had struggled to find experienced coaches to fill the role. While former defender Rafael Marquez was considered, other names like Hansi Flick and Roberto De Zerbi were also linked.

Despite the challenges faced this season, Barcelona sees promise for the future with emerging talents like Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, and Fermin Lopez.
