University suspends student for proposing marriage to girlfriend on campus
Abdullahi Juli Mansur, a 200-level student in the Computer Science department at Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Kano, faced suspension for engaging in what the university deemed as immoral behavior on campus.
Mansur’s suspension stemmed from a public display of affection towards a female classmate on campus, an act of love that was considered inappropriate by the school administration.
A video clip of Mansur attempting to present a red bouquet to the female student went viral on social media, garnering attention from fellow students who reacted with cheers.
Despite the female student declining the public proposal, the university management swiftly responded to the incident. In an Internal Memo dated 14th May 2024, referenced AUS/REG/54, the university announced the suspension of Mansur from his 200-level Computer Science program until further notice.
The memo signed by Sani A. Usman, a deputy registrar, said a disciplinary committee has also been constituted to further examined the development.

“This is to intimate you that Abdullahi Juli Mansur a student of department of computer science, with registration no. AUS/SCC/COM/22/1018 was suspended for displaying improper behavior on campus,” the notice read.
A source close to the university management said the decision was to protect the guiding principles of the institution.
The source said the suspension was initiated because the suspended student had been warned against similar behaviours.
“This is not the first time the boy has been found with that character. We have two previous cases and the university particularly invited the student but he refused to take to caution,” the source said.
“And as you know the university is faith based and such manner is against the principle of Islam and hausa culture. So that was what actually necessitated the suspension.”
