Anuoluwapo Opeyori secures spot at Paris 2024 Olympics, making history for Nigeria

Anuoluwapo Opeyori, the renowned African Men’s Singles Badminton Champion, has clinched a coveted spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, announced by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

With this achievement, Opeyori etches his name in history as the first Nigerian badminton player to qualify for consecutive Olympic Games, having previously competed in Tokyo 2020.

His dominance in African badminton, evident from securing four African Championship titles and two African Games titles since 2019, solidifies his status as a formidable force in the sport.

Expressing elation, Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), lauded Opeyori’s groundbreaking feat, highlighting it as a significant milestone for Nigerian badminton.

Orbih emphasized that Opeyori’s qualification reflects the BFN’s commitment to nurturing world-class athletes, signaling a promising future for Nigerian badminton.

He pledged unwavering support from the BFN to empower young players and facilitate their journey towards podium finishes.

Orbih enthused, “History has been made in badminton as Anuoluwapo Opeyori has secured a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with the release made by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). I am excited and full of joy because Anuoluwapo Opeyori is the first Nigerian badminton player to feature in the men’s singles at the Olympic Games and also the first Nigerian to attend two Olympics and back to back.”

He urged Opeyori to maintain his dedication and perseverance, ensuring he remains in top form for the upcoming Olympic Games.

“I want to urge Anuoluwapo Opeyori to continue training hard for the Games; we are going to ensure he attends training tours before the Olympic Games,” Orbih affirmed, underscoring the federation’s commitment to Opeyori’s success.
