ASUU prepares for nationwide strike amidst council tenure dispute

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is on the brink of initiating a nationwide strike affecting all public universities in the country.

ASUU’s primary concern stems from the premature termination of former councils by the government, a move they deem unlawful.

Prof Adelaja Odukoya, the Lagos Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, emphasised at a recent briefing at the University of Lagos that dismantling councils should only occur if they violate relevant laws.

In addition to their stance on council tenure, ASUU is actively pushing for the release of withheld salaries for its members and staunchly opposing any attempts to establish a master-servant relationship with lecturers.

ASUU said: “We are not slaves and we are not afraid to go on strike, the court case instituted against us by the former administration has been concluded. There is nothing stopping us from going on strike if the need arises.

“They promised us when they came in that there would be peace and harmony on our campuses, but already, they are toeing the path of war.”
