At least 28 dead, several missing in Indonesia flash floods, cold lava flow
Tragedy struck western Indonesia as flash floods and cold lava flow from Mount Marapi claimed the lives of at least 28 individuals, including children, with several missing.
The disaster occurred in Agam and Tanah Datar districts of West Sumatra province following heavy rainfall on Saturday evening.
Cold lava, or lahar, composed of volcanic materials like ash and pebbles, cascaded down the slopes of Mount Marapi, exacerbating the calamity. Abdul Malik, head of the local rescue agency, confirmed the fatalities and ongoing search efforts.
Among the victims were identified nine individuals, including young children, highlighting the devastating impact of the disaster. Rescue teams, equipped with rubber boats, were dispatched to locate the missing persons and provide assistance to affected communities.

Evacuation centers and emergency posts were established by local authorities to provide shelter and support to displaced residents. Indonesia, prone to natural disasters during the rainy season, has faced similar incidents in the past, including landslides and floods.
Mount Marapi, known for its activity, posed additional risks as cold lava flowed from its slopes. The volcano, one of the numerous active ones in the Indonesian archipelago, had previously erupted in December, claiming the lives of 24 climbers.
As Indonesia remains vigilant for potential eruptions, the recent tragedy underscores the importance of disaster preparedness and response measures in vulnerable regions.
