Borno: NEMA distributes 37,000 bags of food to alleviate hunger

In a bid to address hunger in the region, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has supplied the Borno state government with 37,000 bags of various food items authorised by the federal government.

During a handover ceremony in Maiduguri on Monday, NEMA’s director-general Zubaida Umar officially presented the food supplies to the Borno government.

The release of these food packages, amounting to 42,000MT as approved by President Bola Tinubu, aims to provide relief to vulnerable households and groups facing socio-economic challenges in the state.

As part of the strategic reserves overseen by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMoA&FS), the assortment of food commodities includes maize, millet, sorghum, and garri.

Borno state has been designated to receive 594 metric tonnes of maize, 252 metric tonnes of millet, and 9,972 metric tonnes of sorghum (in 50kg bags).

“I want to acknowledge the 37 bags of 50kg assorted grains received by the Federal government under President Tinubu. On behalf of the most vulnerable population of Borno, I wish to appreciate the federal government for its continued support towards the vulnerable population.

“I want to assure Mr President, the Minister of Agriculture and NEMA that the food will be distributed to the most vulnerable population and no diversion will be found,” said Gov. Zulum.

Zulum also commended the federal government for all the other support it has been rendering to the state, noting that in addition to food items, it has been receiving support to strengthen the resilience of the displaced populations.
