Drunk cleric burns down house after misunderstanding with wife

An Islamic cleric from Ekiti State, Ahmed Ojo, has allegedly set his house on fire after his wife declined to participate in a late-night prayer with him.

According to his wife, his behavior was attributed to being drunk.

In an interview with journalists, the cleric’s wife Bosede Afolabi, said the incident took place when her husband arrived home and requested her to pray with him around 11: pm. She declined the request because she was feeling exhausted.

Her refusal to pray made the husband furious, which led to him causing a disturbance. Consequently, she sought help from neighbours to calm him down.

She narrated, “At about midnight, a girl from our neighbourhood came to knock on the house to inform us that my house was on fire and that it seemed my husband had set the house on fire.

“What I observed that night was that he was drunk, which was why I tried to avoid the escalation of the disagreement that ensued on that fateful day. He often comes home drunk sometimes, but we have not had any serious misunderstanding in the past.

“He was later caught and handed over to the police.”

In a phone call on Wednesday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident and reported that the suspect is currently under investigation.
