Story from Usman UMAR

Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, has approved the regulation to ban Occult Ritualism, Ritual Sacrifice, Cigarettes, and others in accordance with section 65 of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) Act 2004 in the nation’s entertainment industry.

The regulation, named “Banning of Occult Ritualism, Ritual Sacrifice, Cigarettes, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion, and Glorification Display in Films, Music Videos, and Skits Regulations 2024,” aims to ensure a more secure and accountable film industry.

The Executive Director of NFVCB stated that the regulation came about through cooperative efforts with various stakeholders, including Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), to address the necessity for additional legislation to diminish the portrayal of smoking in Nigerian films.

The NFVCB also mentioned that it has forwarded the approved version to the Federal Ministry of Justice for official publication and is seeking collaboration with industry stakeholders to produce creative content that discourages smoking and promotes positive health messages.

The Board is dedicated to taking the lead in this area and has devised innovative strategies to fulfill its mission.
