FG steps in to prevent deportation of Nigerian students in UK varsity
In a bid to address the deportation orders faced by Nigerian students at Teesside University in the United Kingdom, the Federal Government has stepped in with a plan to intervene and seek a resolution to the issue.
A delegation, led by Ambassador Christian Okeke from the Nigerian Embassy in the UK, accompanied by leaders of the Nigerian Students Union in the UK, is set to meet with the university’s management to find a way forward.
This decision comes after a virtual meeting chaired by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
Also in attendance were Ambassador Okeke, the President of the Nigerian Students Union UK, Yemi Soile, and several affected students in a meeting that took place on Sunday.

Confirming the planned intervention, the NiDCOM spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, emphasised that the students expressed their experiences and optimism for a positive resolution during the meeting.
Dabiri-Erewa advised the students to stay calm and handle the situation peacefully.
She also appealed to Teesside University to treat the students fairly and justly in this challenging time.
The issue drew attention after a group of Nigerian students at Teesside University staged a protest on May 22, 2024.
The protest was in response to the university’s directive for some students to depart the UK due to alleged non-payment of school fees.
